USSR - Gaz (Gorkovsky Automobilny Zavod/Gorkov (Gor’kov) Automobile Plant) started 1929 a cooperation between Ford and USSR. The plant produced car and truck models that based on Ford models “A” and “AA”, in late 30’s Ford V8 (Gaz M1). Using experience gained while producing Ford designed cars plant’s engineers began develop car model of their own independently of Ford. During the WW II designers worked on all new design that entered into production in 1946 and was named “Poveda” / “Victory” an innovative for a time streamlined sedan with fastback body stile. In 1955 a new model was designed and named “Volga” after the Volga River, which is largest river of the USSR and one of the largest in the world. The “Volga” brand name still in use up to date.
GAZ 24 “New Volga” – “Volga is a brand name of various passenger cars from GAZ. Throughout the Soviet world, Volga cars were seen as a high status symbols, used by party officials, the nomenklatura, and security services. Also all Volga cars traditionally were used as taxi cabs, road police interceptors and ambulances (station wagons). Today, Volga cars are seen as large family sedans and wagons. Cars under this name have been in production since 1956. There are 3 generations: -21 (1956-70), -24 (1970-92) and -31 (since 1982).”
