Jean Rondeau (May 13, 1948 – December 27,1985) was a French racecar driver and constructor who also had a race team that participated in Le Mans race and had won once in 1980. In the history of Le Mans race he was the only man to win in a car bearing his own name and design.
Rondeau cars were powered by Ford-Cosworth V8 engine. The race was a strong competition against the Porsche 980/80 driven by Jacky Ickx and Reinhold Joest, finally Rondeau took overall victory by two laps. It was the only win by Rondeau driver and team. In 1981 the team scored 2nd and 3 rd place. In 1982 Rondeau introduced M382 and all-new M482 car. While all cars entered into Le Mans race retired in 1982 the team was very close to win the Manufacturers’ title in the World Sportscar Championship. However, Porsche won the title after FIA ruling allowed to claim points from a privately entered Porsche 911 at the Nurburgring race.
Rondeau team competed just for one more year. In 1984 Rondeau and John Paul Jr. finished 2nd driving Swap Shop Porsche 956 a Preston Henn Race Team car.
Rondeau was killed in his car hit by a train when passing over a closed rail road crossing.
Last time Rondeau car participated in Le Mans Race in 1988 entered by a privateer. A total of 19 Rondeau chassis were constructed. They say that 17 of these cars remain in existence.
