“Testa Rossa” is Italian for “redhead”.  The TR or 250 Testa Rossa were a sport line of famous Ferrari 250 line and were built in the 50’s and 60’s.  TR are second most valued Ferrari after the 250 GTO. The most well known is the 250TR were produced from 1957 to 1958 with only 2 factory cars and 19 customers cars were built.  250 TR had red color head gaskets from which derived the name of the car.  Early production cars had unorthodox body work by Sergio Scaglietti. This car often called “Pantoon” TR.  In 1958 driven by Oliver Gendebien and Phil Hill this car won 1958 Le Mans.  Though this was a successful aerodynamic design and allowed good front drums brakes cooling it also was instable at high speed.  Ferrari changed the looks with conventional bodies designed by Pininfarina and Carrozzeria Touring.  The 250 TR has the SOHC short-block, Columbo V12, same displacement engine as other 250 series but was tuned to produce higher power output.  The car dominated at competition and won many events including famous 24 Hours Le Mans Race in 1958, 1960 and 1961.  The 250 Testa Rossa brought huge racing success to the Ferrari.  The car introduced a design philosophy that focused on reliability over outright performance.  The car was tested in 1957 and Ferrari announced the 250 Testa Rossa at their pre-season press conference in November 1957.  Many criticized old for the time technology compare to other cars of the era, like drum brakes and SOHC.  But the car was very robust and reliable that helped to win many races.  Most cars were sold to independent customers.  However Ferrari run the works team and it was realized that in order to win the Sports Car Championship many changes were needed.  Though both customers and works team used the tipo 128 engine the developments progressed only on the factory cars, the cars were upgraded with a De Dion rear axel and many other modifications.  Works team competed in the 1958 season with four cars, two prototypes and two other cars.  Though all four were called TR58s each had individual specification.

The 1958 was very successful season for Ferrari 250 TR, even its major competitor Aston Martin DBR1 was much faster car but due to the unreliability it lost most races to Ferrari and Ferrari won the Manufacturers Championship.  In 1958 Ferrari stopped delivery of the customers Testa Rossa, they continued development of the factory-backed works cars and TR59 was heavily refined for the 1959 season.
