Matchbox Collectibles - Upscale Models for Adult Collectors
Platinum Editions
“These detailed Matchbox collectibles available are quite different from the small, low-cost Matchbox models mass-marketed to children. These models, call "Platinum Editions" feature superior levels of detailing and decoration, a high number of quality parts, and all-die-cast chassis. In addition, each "Platinum Edition" vehicle is sold with a certificate of authenticity in a collector box.” Models presented in different scales most cars are in 1/43; semi-trucks in 1:58, small semi-trucks in 1/100 (suitable for the HO gauge), tooling from Models of Yesteryear series are varies.
Packaging was designed for direct sale and consisted from foam or plastic formed inner packaging packed in a carton box.
Models from this line were issued in series, usually 6 pcs., in the series, and sold via direct Matchbox subscription sale and limited numbers of dealers. Models from this line were released under Matchbox and Dinky brand names. Majority of models are tooling that were developed for this line, however many models were made from updated old tooling or unique liveries. Many models are loaded with tons of extras. Some models released in this line were released in other Matchbox collections that ware available for sale in stores, however most such models were stripped down versions, for example Muscle Cars didn’t have underbody parts and some small exterior parts, fire trucks were stripped from auxiliary equipment and so for. The ‘Platinum Edition’ logo present on boxes of only small fraction of models from this line but is commonly known name for products released within the scope of the line.
In early 2000’s Mattel, which is the owner of Matchbox and Dinky brands, discontinued the line. Remaining inventory was sold to liquidators and as a result price on many models plunged. However, buy now most models from this line not only regain its original price but also sold at the premium price and still enjoy the price appreciation. Since no more models will be produced in this line the price appreciation process most likely will continue.
