This is a nicely detailed and painted model of a really good WW II fighter plane that first flew in April 1942 and was in production till 1948.  The plane reached Italian squadrons (stormo) by the summer of 1943.  The Macchi 205 had the same airframe as its predecessor MC 202 “Folgore”, but its new Daimler Benz 605 or Fiat 1,475 bhp in line engines made it a mach better fighter.  With new engines speed increased to 650km/h @ 7,400m, range increased from 765 to 1,040 km.  In addition to its two 12.7mm machine guns in the cowling two wing mounted 7.7mm machine guns were added but very soon were replaced with 20mm cannons. The MC 205 Veltro was equal if not superior compare to any piston engine powered Allies planes.  However, Italians were unable to produce planes, and especially engines, in required quantities.   Macchi build 1,100 of MC 202 “Folgore” and only 250 of MC 205 Veltro including those produced after the end of the WW II.

Many 1/72 scale die cast plane models collectors saying that Corgi and Dragon produced better quality.  Well maybe better, but no other maker of models from this range had better selection and ixo still produce models of new planes at really high pace and more importantly in wide range of planes not only Me 109, Fw 190, Ju 87, Mustang and Spitfire.
