S-Class is the line of Mercedes-Benz, a division of Daimler-Chrysler, represents luxury flagship sedan. The all new W221 S-Class S500 model that became available for sale in 2005 as 2006 model.
The W221 was introduced on the US market at the Los Angeles Auto Show in January, 2006 with the S550 and later at Detroit Motor Show with S65 AMG and became available for sale as 2007 model. The new S-Class is slightly larger compare to its predecessor W220 and will be available in two body lengths, the wheelbase also increased on W221. The W221 increased in all dimensions it 16 mm (0.63”) wider, 29 mm (1.14”) higher and length increased 33 mm (1.3”) and 43 mm (1.7”) while wheelbase increased by SWB - 70 mm (2.76”) and LWB – 80 mm (3.15”). The new W221 features more aggressive appearance, compare to its W220 predecessor, and have strong resemblances to Maybach. The interior is a totally new design, all materials used for the interior are upgraded compare to W220, the transmission shifter had been moved to the column creating space on the center console for the new command system’s control wheel. Three newly developed engines are available for W221. All new engines have higher power output and torgue. V6 and V8 models will have 7-speed automatic transmission as the part of the standard equipment. It has conventional hydraulic power assisted brakes, four-wheel drive option is expected be available by the end of 2006. New the Distronic Plus Cruise Control system can automatically bring the car to a complete stop in traffic. Improved “airmatic” suspension system provides a comfortable ride without compromising of handling ability. They say that the car is significantly quitter compare to any of its rivals and set the new benchmarks in noise, vibration and harshness.
Among the long list of the car features I will list: The car has Night View Assist - night vision system that improves vision at night and uses infrared cameras along with two “near infrared light” headlights. Pre-safe system, which closes the sunroof and windows, adjusts the seats and back rests, and tightens the front seatbelts if it detects and imminent crash. Parktronic (Park Assist) pioneered on W140 S-Class) uses a rear camera and all round radar and assists in parking.
With W221 Mercedes brought back the 600 series that equipped with V12 twing-turbo 6.0 L engine that has 510hp and the AMG version S65 engine tuned for 604 hp.
