About the Jagdtiger:
The German Jagdtiger (SdKfz 186) "Hunting Tiger" was a tank destroyer made on the slightly extended chassis of the Tiger II "King Tiger". It featured very heavy armor and a powerful 128mm L/55 PaK44 gun capable of defeating any tank fielded in WW2, even at long ranges. It had 250mm armor on the front glacis, which made it practically invulnerable to any frontal fire. However, the Jagdtiger had no turret, and the main gun had a limited traverse of only 10 degrees, meaning the entire vehicle had to turn to aim at enemy tanks. It suffered from the same maladies as the King Tiger: an underpowered engine, frequent breakdowns, and poor maneuverability. These problems, along with the lack of a turret, made it extremely vulnerable to infantry with anti-tank weapons. Still, when properly supported, the Jagdtiger was an extremely formidable opponent.”***
This model presented with 8 (eight) road-wheels (700mm in diameter) suspension designed by Porsche, other type is 9 road-wheels (800mm in diameter). Henschel designed suspension. Eleven (11) units were build with Porsche type running gear, which was simpler along with being half times cheaper and less time consuming to produce than that of Henschel.
Only 85 units were manufactured out of 150 ordered. Initially it was planned to supply Jagdtiger to heavy Tiger battalions (sPzAbt). However it was decided to formed two heavy tank destroyer battalions equipped exclusively with Jagdtiger - schwere Panzerjager Abteilung. sPzJagAbt 512 was formed in the Summer of 1944 and was composed of two companies. Elements of sPzJagAbt 512 took part in the Operation "Fruhlingerswachen" in Hungary (part of VI SS Panzer Army), and then in the defense of the Fatherland on both Western and Eastern Front. sPzJagAbt 653 was formed in the Spring of 1945 and probably was not more than an understrength company. It probably took part in Ardennes offensive and then was employed on the Western Front (Rhein and Karlsruhe area).
It appears that 4 to 6 Jagdtigers were used by the schwere SS Panzer Abteilung (101) 501 in April/May of 1945.
